I’m having power steering issues. The steering is always heavy. I changed fluid and filter. The pump seems ok (not making any noises when turning). No leaks. Maybe the servotronics unit bad. How can you test the unit?
Hi Emil, the only reliable way to check the issue is to use a pressure gauge for the power steering system, you have to hook up the gauge to the system and see if the pump is generating enough pressure. The pressure could also be too high, which would indicate a system restriction, which would restrict fluid flow and cause the same issue as low pressure. Without using the gauge you can take the cap off of the power steering reservoir and have someone hold the steering wheel at full lock, either left or right, you will be looking for flow in the reservoir. When the steering wheel is at full lock, the pump should output full pressure, which would mean you will see fluid flowing through the reservoir. Outside these two options, I would recommend you have a reputable shop take a look at the issue. On another note, it is very important that the correct fluid is used, if it is not, it will cause issues with the system, up to pump/steering box failures. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you.
