Question

Hi, Stan recommended i reach out to you. I just purchased a 2000 M Z3. When driving it at time, the gear shifter will rattle – if i put my hand on it, it will stop and it does not happen all the time. I have read there is a plastic part under at the base that can go bad and that could cause it? But wanted to check before i took it into the dealer. My 2nd question may sound strange. When i bought the car, during the test drive the airbag sensor came on. I required the dealer to fix it and when i picked it up it was off. Then driving home that first day, it came back on, so i took it back. They cleared it and said, it was because my cell phone was in my pocket and to put it in the center counsel vs my pocket. Now, i have done that and the light has not come back on, but that seemed very strange to me. Thanks – Jeff

Answer

2000 BMW Z3 M shifter diagram with part numbersHello Mr. McCabe, as far as the shifter goes the likely cause if the plastic bushing that holds the bottom of the shifter, it could also be in the bushings for the shifter linkage, someone will have to look at them to be sure.

Regarding the airbag light, while possible that the cellphone interfered with it as the control module for the airbag sits by the center console, it is unlikely that it would cause the light to go on. You can have a shop take a look at it t make sure, if the light has been on it should have an error code stored in it.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thank you.

UPDATE

Hello Mr. McCabe, sorry it took a little while but I was getting a picture together for you. It is not a bad job if you have a lift, however, doing it on the ground is not very easy as the shifter sits directly above the exhaust, thus restricting the amount of space you have to work. The picture includes all of the parts that should be replaced along with the part numbers. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thank you.

  1. Heads up on the airbag.. had a recall on my dashboard air bag on my 325IC 2005 and Fields BMW Mobile service came out to service. The airbag was not replaced so I presume it was a sensor. Never heard of a modern day cell phone interferring with control modules. jv

  2. I’m happy that it has been taken care of. I have never had an issue with interference nor have I heard of it.
