Hi Gil,
I own a 1990 325i, and it has an Air Bag, I previously owned (about 12 years ago) a 1989 325i with no Air Bag. My question is this. Can I remove the Air Bag and install an aftermarket steering wheel? I don’t care about the SRS Light blinking, and I wear my seat belt every time I drive. I will remove anything related to the SRS system if I have to. The 1989 and 1990 are identical except the stupid Air Bag.
Thank You,
Rene
Hello Rene, the short answer is yes, you can replace the steering wheel with an aftermarket one, and no, you cannot legally turn the SRS light off as it is a safety device, therefore, against federal law, much like the Tire Pressure Monitoring Light.
Do keep in mind that if you use an aftermarket steering wheel you will have to also install an adapter, which will bring the steering wheel closer to you than the factory wheel, not a safety issue but a comfort issue. Try to sit in an E30 with an aftermarket wheel before deciding. I did have an aftermarket steering wheel and seat in my 89 coupe, because the race seat did not have the height and tilt adjustments I did not like how close it was to me, it should work better with the factory seats, not sure as I have not tried it myself. Hope I was able to help.
